All eyes on Rahul Gandhi
The symptoms of what ails the Congress are obvious enough. But there are no signs yet if the leadership has diagnosed the ailments, let alone remedies to cure them. Whether Rahul Gandhi pondered over them during his decidedly curious and prolonged sabbatical will be known soon. So prudence would be in order. Perhaps the only hypothesis one can advance right now is that the scion of the Gandhi family would need to propose a bitter medicine with miraculous properties – one that cheers his flock, confounds its adversaries and reluctant allies and bewilders his critics in the media. That, however, is, to put it as mildly as possible, a tall order.
Never before in its history has the party been so bruised and battered, so demoralised and divided, so rudderless and lacking in self-esteem. Never before has it been so bereft of ideas, policies and programmes to rejuvenate itself. The party has faced several crisis in the past but it managed to overcome them without too much damage to its overall clout.
Soon after independence, for example, many socialists quit the Congress to form a separate political outfit. So did many right-wing elements led by Acharya Kripalini. All the same, a substantial number of individuals of both persuasions continued to remain in the party partly because they could still make their presence felt in decision-making bodies and partly because of Jawaharlal Nehru’s unequalled charisma. While the organisation was able to accommodate diverse view-points, Nehru was able to chart a middle course that was acceptable, despite reservations, to all ideological factions within the fold. Moreover, he respected Congress regional leaders who, in turn, acknowledged his leadership.
The Congress organisation underwent a sea-change with the advent of Indira Gandhi. Once she split the party in 1969, she went about concentrating power in her own hands. Regional leaders were cut down to size. Those loyal to her were promoted. Their lack of a popular base was not a disqualification – quite to the contrary. The cult of personality reached its apogee after she imposed a state of emergency in June 1975. That was the start of a ‘committed’ bureaucracy, judiciary and media. The Congress was booted out in the 1977 general elections. But two years later it was back in harness. That success must be attributed to Indira Gandhi’s strong, never-say-die personality and to her unabashed deployment of populist politics.
How much Nehru was responsible for the growth of dynastic politics is still a matter of debate. But that was not the case with Indira Gandhi. Once her younger son, Sanjay, who emerged as the real face of the emergency regime, was killed in an aviation accident, she promoted her older son, Rajiv, to succeed her. He took over as Prime Minister after she was assassinated in 1984. Until then he had no direct experience of politics. No matter. And when he, in turn, fell victim to an assassination, it was only a matter of time before his widow, Sonia, began to call the shots in the party.
She was biding her time during P.V. Narasimha Rao’s tenure and that of Vajpayee’s tenure. But it is she who campaigned hard to take the Congress to victory twice in succession. The decade-long rule of the UPA under Dr. Manmohan Singh would not have been possible but for her firm control over the Congress and, as many suspect, her control over the government. But she also prepared the ground for Rahul Gandhi’s ascension in the party fold.
And this is where things began to unravel. Rahul made no mark as a parliamentarian. His electioneering proved to be disastrous not just in the 2014 general elections but in subsequent elections to several state assemblies. He was simply incapable of matching Narendra Modi’s oratorical skills, use of social media or his appeal to an increasingly young electorate.

Like most Aanand L Rai films, the sequel too has a distinct North Indian flavor and we are definitely looking forward to the release of the film.

Rishi Kapoor gives family dinner with Ranbir-Katrina a miss
The alleged lovebirds (who are reportedly in a live-in relationship) Ranbir Kapoor- Katrina Kaif were spotted dining with the Kapoor family.
Those who dined with the couple were Ranbir's family - mom Neetu Kapoor, sister Riddhima Kapoor- Sahni, uncle Randhir Kapoor and grandmother Krishna Raj Kapoor.
However, Ranbir Kapoor's father Rishi Kapoor gave the dinner a miss. Rishi Kapoor is believed to be disapproving of Ranbir Kapoor's alleged girlfriend Katrina Kaif. Was that the reason for Chintu Kapoor not attending the family dinner? Well only he can answer.
Rishi, however, was part of a social cause at Pali Hill the next day.
Ranbir Kapoor like a doting son and grandson received his mother Neetu Kapoor and Krishna Raj Kapoor.

New Delhi, Apr. 16 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed his gratitude to U.S. President Barrack Obama for his touching and inspiring words in a written profile that has appeared in the Time Magazine.
"Dear @BarackObama your words are touching and inspiring. Thanks @TIME," the Indian leader said in a tweet.
The article titled 'India's reformer-in-chief' written by the U.S. President refers to the Indian Prime Minister's life story 'from poverty to Prime Minister' as one that resonates of dynamism and potential of India's rise.
"Determined to help more Indians follow in his path, he's (Modi) laid out an ambitious vision to reduce extreme poverty, improve education, empower women and girls and unleash India's true economic potential while confronting climate change," said President Obama.
He further stated, "Like India, he (Modi) transcends the ancient and the modern-a devotee of yoga who connects with Indian citizens on Twitter and imagines a "Digital India."
Recalling Prime Minister Modi's visit to Washington in September 2014, President Obama said that their visit to the memorial to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. allowed both to reflect "on the teachings of King and Gandhi and how the diversity of backgrounds and faiths in our countries is a strength we have to protect."

Amyra Dastur, who is currently gearing up for Vishesh Films and Fox Star Studios MR X had a dream of working with co-star Emraan Hashmi.
Every newcomer has a director and actor in mind they wish to work with. When Amyra was asked about the actor or director she is keen to work with, she said, "My hero in this industry is Sanjay Leela Bhansali. I have grown up watching his films, I love them, I just love his films. I got to work with Emraan, that was one dream, so that's there. Otherwise I think, all of them are fantastic and my favourite is Aamir Khan."
Further when quizzed if she always wanted to be an actress, she said, "Ever since I was a kid, I was always fascinated with films. Udaipur: Television actress and Big Boss 5 contestant Pooja Missra on Wednesday lodged an FIR against five persons, including actress Sonakshi Sinha and her mother Poonam, for hatching a conspiracy to harass her during her stay in a hotel here.
"She has named Poonam Sinha, Sonakshi Sinha, model Isha Koppikar, Isha's husband and another man in the FIR as the accused who conspired to harass her through different persons in Udaipur," police said.

Missra alleged in the FIR that unknown persons tried to harass her by stealing her purse and cigarettes and entering into her hotel room without permission when she was staying in the hotel here from April 11 to 14 in connection with an event, police said.
"She said two persons entered her room on April 11 without her permission and disappeared when she objected. After some time, one man tried to touch her... Her purse was also stolen from the hotel room on April 13 and later found in the room itself," police said.
The FIR was lodged at Amba Mata police station in Udaipur under sections 379 (theft) and 354 (assault with intent to

An enraged Varun Dhawan took to Twitter and wrote, "Me and @ShraddhaKapoor worked very hard to make this poster specially shraddha so whoever leaked the poster and tried to break our spirit. I want to say to that individual that #HatersGonnaHate but we gonna keep on moving ahead #ABCD2 is a very special film and Remo has Put his everything into it. She knows all about having children - she has thirteen already. But her latest pregnancy came about via a method which is banned in Germany – egg donation.
Strident criticism of Raunigk’s decision seems to be the prevailing attitude. Several top government health ministers have waded in and stated that this should not become the norm – i.e. just because something is medically possible does not mean it should be done. Social media is treating her with mockery and contempt.
So how did this all happen? Raunigk, at 65, is past the menopause, hence the need for a donated egg. While this practice is banned in Germany, it is perfectly legal in other countries. In Ukraine, to where Raunigk travelled for the procedure, many hospitals charge up to 5,300 dollars for the privilege.
Those procedures can be very risky, since they can endanger the health of the egg donors, the (potentially) pregnant women and the unborn babies. Many things can go wrong. Germany therefore believes that ‘egg trading’ should be prevented at all costs.
Medical innovation is treated with extreme caution
There is a simple reason for this rigid attitude - the Third Reich. Horrifying medical experiments were carried out on humans and many physically and mentally disabled people were murdered under the guise of charitable euthanasia. This is why Germany today is quick to raise concerns over technological and medical innovations of this kind. Perhaps other countries can take a more impartial view on the topic.
But the debate around the Raunigk case uncovers other issues as well. It has become clear how conservative and unprogressive the prevailing attitude is. In a nutshell, people say she is being selfish, since, at 65, she will not be able to spend enough of her lifetime with her children. They say she is out of touch with reality, underestimating the burden of taking care of quadruplets, especially for a woman who is a grandmother's age. Reports have even emerged that Raunigk’s 10-year-old daughter has been picked on because her mother is so much older.
